Manchester United’s transfer activity has taken a major hit.

It’s an open secret that the Red Devils and manager Eric Ten Haag have named Porto goalkeeper Diogo Costa as their No. 1 replacement for David de Gea.

There are many questions surrounding De Gea’s applicability to the Ten Haag system.

While he is an excellent goalkeeper, the Spaniard’s ability to play with both feet and initiate sweeping movements is limited.

He has recently shown glimpses of progress in these areas, but there is no denying the fact that there are better options out there, hence the constant link to Porto’s Costa.

However, United were dealt a major blow in their pursuit of the Portuguese even before the transfer window arrived.

Costa has signed a new long-term contract with Porto.

The La Liga giants have officially announced that their coveted player has signed new terms that will keep him at the Estádio do Dragão until 2027.

Costa initially had a relatively good €60m release clause, which is considered very friendly for a club like Manchester United, especially given the player’s age.

After Peter Schmeichel, Edwin van der Sar and David de Gea, Diogo Costa has what it takes to be Manchester United’s next great goalkeeper. This is the guaranteed value for the next ten years for the 60 million euros disclaimer.

With the signing of the new contract, Porto have invested bigger and bigger sums to pry their prized possessions away from them.

Exported by Portugal a boraCosta’s new disclaimer is an astronomical 75 million euros.

The length of his extended contract also means Porto are now firmly in talks with any elite club that wants Costa’s services.

It remains to be seen what action the joint hierarchy takes. Will they keep chasing Costa, or will they be put off by this huge setback and turned to other goals?
