CANTON, Ohio – A Canton teenager died Sunday evening in a car accident near Toledo.
Canton Central Catholic school officials confirmed junior Jacob Brown died in the crash.
Maumee police responded to the fatal crash at 8:30 p.m. Sunday near Key and White streets. Police said Brown was driving a 2014 Black Ford Fusion westbound on US 24 at a high rate of speed when the vehicle left the roadway and struck a tree.
In a statement, the school’s principal, David Oates, asked the community to pray for Brown, his friends and family.
“Our community is very sad to have to share the news of the loss of Jacob,” he said. “Central Catholic is a small, close-knit community and his loss will be felt deeply by our Crusader family. Students, staff, and our families have been informed of his passing.
“We have our guidance counselors, campus minister and president, the Rev. Donald King, on hand to talk and pray with any student, staff member or family member who needs them.”
The school canceled a Booster Club meeting scheduled for Monday night, and the boys’ soccer sectional tournament game that was to be played Monday has been postponed at the request of the team. Brown was part of the Crusader soccer team.
The game was rescheduled for 6 p.m. Tuesday at home against Loudonville, and attendees are asked to wear white in his honor. At the start of the game, Brown and his family will be remembered.
King, the president of Stark County Catholic Schools, said the community is “deeply saddened” by the loss.
“As we do in all things, we have come together in prayer, and we ask the community to join us as we pray for Jacob and his family and friends who need God’s comfort now more than ever. May Jacob’s soul rest in peace,” he said.
